Tabs Ulmer, Intern

I am Tabs, a non-binary femme, student therapist coming to session with a behavioral background and an open mind. As a student therapist I look forward to practicing the various approaches to the presenting issues we uncover together in sessions. I received my undergraduate degree from Edinboro University in Early Childhood Development and Special Education and went onto work as a behavioral therapist for the next 5 years. One approach to issues which I have adopted in my practice is the idea that all behavior is communication, sometimes we need some help finding out what we are trying to say. Working with behavior intervention taught me that sometimes our behavior does not reflect our intentions, desires or even conscious choices, sometimes we find ourselves stuck in habits and patterns we never imagined. Together, we can work to find those areas of concern, address them and work to uncover the story within. Additionally, behavior therapy taught me that no one is an island as I was able to work alongside families and the autistic community in clinics, schools and homes for the last 10 years.  After the onset of the pandemic, I returned to school to obtain my masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and a certificate in Behavior Analysis at Capella University. I believe that we all need a community of lovers, learners and connections, expression and emotion are all a part of the process towards healthier relationships. in the therapeutic setting. This can include exploring sex therapy related concerns. I look forward to meeting you as individuals, duos, trios and groups. Whether a chosen family or a family bound by genetics, I look forward to listening to you in session.
