My name is Sammi (they/them), I am a nationally certified counselor. I am a white, pansexual, neurodivergent, polyamorous, and gender fluid individual who considers themselves to be an areligious, agnostic person. I believe that people have the potential to create their own meaning from their lived experiences, whether that be through personal choice, through acceptance, or through change. I am always striving to challenge norms of all kinds, and to open up more space for diversity and intersectionality. I am drawn towards all forms of art, design, nature, and history. On my off days I enjoy hiking, thrifting, cooking, and going to a show or a movie. I have always been an empathetic and compassionate person, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be able to use those aspects of myself as a therapeutic tool.
My Background and Approach
It is of utmost importance to me to show up as presently and as authentic to myself as possible, and that rings especially true for the therapeutic space. I am casual, direct, warm, compassionate, and honest, and I can be expressive with my reactions. I firmly believe that clients are the experts of their own lives, including their needs, values, and desires. I view the therapeutic relationship as a relationship amongst equals, and I consider it an honor to help guide clients towards reaching their most authentic and liberated selves. For this reason, I tend to gravitate towards Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), an approach that places emphasis on embracing life’s inevitable challenges and living a life guided towards one’s values and beliefs. When using this approach, I would assist you in holding space for difficult thoughts and feelings that may arise, discovering goals that are in line with the direction that you want your life to go in, and cultivating the energy to follow through with them.
In addition to utilizing ACT, I am sex positive, kink and BDSM-affirming, queer and gender-affirming, as well as polyamory and consensual non monogamy-affirming. I am committed to normalizing the experiences of those who are neurodivergent, particularly in a world predominantly designed for neurotypical people. Moreover, as someone who was diagnosed later in life, I am familiar with the complex range of emotions that comes along with a late diagnosis- such as validation, confusion, and grief- and I am passionate about helping to guide those on a similar journey. Further, I have experience working with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, bipolar I & II, and psychosis.
It is essential to me that you feel comfortable to express your wants and needs, and if we are not ultimately a good match, I would be happy to assist you in finding a therapist that you believe may be a better fit. I will check in with you about how the therapeutic relationship and process is working for you. Ultimately, I intend to work with you to create a safe and collaborative space.
