There is no “right” or “wrong” way to transition.
If you identify as Trans, Non-Binary, or Gender Non Conforming (GNC), you may be considering some type of transition for yourself. Maybe you want to transition and have hormones, and Gender Affirmation Surgery (GAS). Maybe you identify as Non-Binary, but feel uncomfortable having breasts, and are considering top surgery. Maybe you identify as GNC and want to present differently at different times.
My reason for explaining some examples, is that there simply is no one way to transition. There is also not a “right” or “wrong” way to transition.
When I worked at an all LGBTQ+ agency some years ago, I founded a support group for all Trans and GNC folks. I decided to name that group, Evolutions. I choose that name because each and every person is evolving in their own way. And that is perfectly okay and absolutely necessary. Often, I hear GNC folks say to other GNC folks that for one reason or another, they are “transitioning wrong”. Obviously this is quite hurtful, and completely untrue.
Wherever you are in your transition journey, the only person who can decide what your transition should look like, feel like, or when you’re finished transitioning, is you. If you are unsure about exactly how you want to transition, therapy with a therapist who specializes in the LGBTQ+ community can be extremely helpful. You may also want to seek out a virtual or in person support group as well.
Remember that every human being is evolving, and everyone’s evolution will look different, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
